Obesity | German Medical Clinics

Obesity

Our obesity center is one of the few obesity centers in Germany. It includes all kind of obesity treatments and surgeries. Its one of the first certified obesity centers in Germnay and may be described as COMPETENCE CENTRE FOR OBESITY SURGERY. We are also one of the few clinics in Germany who actually offer all surgical procedures.

Our Services

You are left only with small scars that heal directly after operation and dissappear.

For the expensive and complex operations, we use the highest international levels of equipment for minimally-invasive surgery including an operating room with the newest HDTV technique.

All bariatric patients who undergo an individual procedure are observed in our intensive care unit directly after the operation. Every day, medical attendance is ensured by our special Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Team.

All patients are included in standardized follow-up care, which includes:

  1. clinical examination
  2. additional dietary consultation
  3. laboratory testing
  4. sonography
  5. endoscopy
  6. special radiological methods (3D computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging for the stomach).

Surgeries

A new technique to eat less and control your food without surgery.

Using a faster-achieved feeling of satiety and recording eating and activity habits, the abiliti® system aims to make the change in dietary behaviour of the patient and therefore to achieve permanent weight loss. It is suitable for patients with a BMI of 35-55.

After activation of the gastric pacemaker, the device registers receiving solid and liquid food and sends low-energy pulses to the stomach. Through these stimulations it produces a feeling of satiety before the stomach is actually filled and thus patient eats less. The gastric pacemaker at the same time records when patient eats, drinks and is physically active. Patient and doctor can therefore analyse the recorded data together and develop effective strategies for weight loss. With a reader device patients also have direct access to these records of food intake and activity and thus have the possibility of monitoring their own daily habits at home.

You want to be able to finally lose weight but without a surgery?

A gastric balloon treatment may contribute to weight reduction with severe obesity. With this procedure a part of the stomach is filled with a balloon enriched with saline solution. This results in faster feeling of satiety. With a non-surgical intervention a gastric balloon is endoscopically inserted through the mouth and throat into the stomach.

Our Obesity Centre now uses a new adjustable gastric balloon system with one year of service life.

The (adjustable) gastric band is preferably used with patients who have a BMI of 35 to 45. The procedure of placing the band around the upper part of the stomach and placing the reservoir under the skin (cf. figure) is executed laparoscopically, i.e. through only a few small abdominal sections of a few millimetres in size. The tape can be adjusted from the outside without any further operation through the reservoir and with that adjusted to achieve the desired target weight. The band should remain in the body for a lifetime and a loss of 40 to 50% of the overweight can be expected in about 2 years.

In this operation the stomach is completely divided in two and a small pouch, so called forestomach, created (about 15 to 20 ml in volume). At the same time, the small intestine is cut and redirected roughly 60 cm behind the duodenum. The lower part of the small intestine is connected to the smaller part of the stomach and the rest of the stomach and duodenum during food intake is bypassed.

Sleeve gastrectomy is in fact a stomach reduction procedure. With this procedure, the stomach is laparoscopically reduced in its length, so that only a small tube with a volume of about 150-200 ml is remained. The rest of the stomach is removed. By reducing the size of the gastric tube has a restrictive effect. In addition, a significantly reduced feeling of hunger is achieved by reducing the hunger hormone ghrelin, which is produced mainly in the gastric fundus. The sleeve gastrectomy is applied in rare cases, with a BMI between 40 and 55 kg/m2, and it is considered as an alternative to gastric band.

Statistically, what is expected is a reduction of the obesity by 70% within 2 years.

The so-called biliopancreatic division allows extensive weight loss. Statistically speaking 70 to 80% of the overweight is lost within 2 years.

This procedure is recommended for patients with a BMI of 55 kg/m2. For patients with diabetes, this operation method is highly effective as in most cases it leads to a complete remission (decrease) of the disease.
