What are Gastrointestinal disorders?

The most widely known gastrointestinal disease is colon cancer.

Gastrointestinal disorders (GI disorders) are any abnormality in the normal function of the intestines. They can be subdivided into functional and inflammatory. Functional disorders occur when there is an irregularity on the way the body works. It is characterized by symptoms not by a visible sign of an injury. Chronic diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and constipation are some of the functional GI disorders. Inflammatory disorders on the other hand occur due to an inflammation in any part of the gastrointestinal tract. Examples of an inflammatory GI disorder are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

The common symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders are pain, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, vomiting and abdominal distention. Treatments for gastrointestinal disorders depend on type of GI disorder that is present.
